Selling Weird

October 9, 2011 By Ben

I was surrounded by about 5,000 or dead people – Zombies.

zombie pub crawl

Last night was what has become the annual Zombie Pub Crawl, an event where thousands of people zombify themselves and go bar hopping.

What started out as a small gathering of like minded zombies a few years ago has now organically grown into a giant phenomenon. The entire event, split between two cities, totaled over 24,000 people.

While I was enjoying the event, I couldn’t help but wonder – would this have been possible 15 years ago?

Probably not.

The internet has made being weird a little bit more normal. People with weird little quirks or hobbies can find entire worlds online full of similar “weird” people.

When making or marketing a product, the first instinct is to look towards the mass, but that’s not always the best instinct. There is big opportunity in the “weird” niches, which have become amplified thanks to the internet. Weird is the new normal.
